We were using the Mountain Buggy Nano stroller which was awesome and super compact, but since we take our son out of the car seat now and put him directly in the stroller, the Nano (having a shorter seat height) hasn’t been the best fit for us. With a 4 month old, the Nano stroller seat is far too low, and our son isn’t even in our peripheral vision when he’s in the stroller. With the car seat, the Nano is still the most amazing stroller, but without the car seat, not very good for an infant to be seated in it directly. Especially when you’re shopping at Costco – where things are so huge and open, and you’re worried about a tiny baby in a stroller! And yes, I’m aware that you aren’t even supposed to put a baby directly into the Nano until they’re 6 months, but you’re also not supposed to keep them in their car seats for extended periods of time, so its half a dozen of one, six of another.
Anyways, so in comes the UPPAbaby Cruz. We were looking specifically for a stroller where our 4 month old could sit directly in it (without the use of a car seat), and we wanted something that had the option of a parent facing seat as well. This stroller has far exceeded our expectations.
It took me a while to figure out how to tighten the straps on this stroller – adjusting the height of the straps was easy but figuring out how to tighten them was a nightmare. But once I figured it out I feel like such a dumbass because it was so easy. I’ve uploaded a video below if you need to figure this out. Pros:
It’s super lights weight. At 22lbs, it’s one of the lightest full size strollers on the market. If you take the seat off, the frame itself is only 16.5lbs. Which makes it really easy to get into the trunk of your car.
The wheels are sturdy making it very easy to push over terrain, or easy to push over a lip for example on an escalator, or a door frame when walking into a store.
Seems snug, cozy, comfortable and warm. We purchased the infant insert (our son is almost 5 months old), and the insert seems to help with the fit of an infant in the stroller. The infant insert is awesome as it is reversible, giving you a warm fleecy feel on the one side, and a moisture wicking cool feel on the other side for the summer. A good investment since it’s like you’re getting two for the price of one.
Convenient latch on the back, so you can easily adjust the recline on the seat. Oh. My. Gosh. So much easier than the stupid straps that some of the other strollers come with.
Very easy fold. We looked at a whole bunch of other strollers, including a few from Guzzie + Guss, Phil and Teds, Stokke, Armadillo, Bugaboo, and the UPPAbaby was by far the easiest to fold and unfold. Even my husband has no problems folding it up! So, in other words, it’s man-proof!
Fairly small wheel base, making maneuvering around malls, stores, and restaurants fairly hassle-free.
Available accessories such as blankets that attach to the stroller so you don’t lose the blanket, as well as cup holders (which is awesome for me, since being a new mom has caused me to have a coffee with me 24/7!)
Cons:
Folded size. This is a huge drawback for me. We have a 2015 Toyota Camry and, and it almost takes up the whole trunk, with the diaper bag in there too. We normally remove the seat when we fold it up and put it in the trunk as well, and it still takes up a lot of space. It doesn’t have the ability for you to fold it up with the seat in the parent facing position, so we normally remove the seat to fold it up.
Costly but not nearly as expensive as some other brands. So this could be a pro or a con.
Overall, immediately when we took it out, there was an obvious difference in how it rides. You can tell right off the bat that it’s a quality product. Even when you’re adjusting the height of the straps, there’s a separate loop for each height adjustment, rather than struggling with trying to fish one strap loop through the slots. (See image below). It’s a pricy stroller, but worth the expense of you’re gonna use it all the time with a (young) infant. Our son seemed very comfortable in it, and when he normally fussed and cried in our other stroller, he seemed content, sleeping in the UPPAbaby Cruz, and when he woke up he was just chill, looking around and quiet (rather than his usual fussing). If you want peace and quiet, and to promote a sleeping baby while you shop, this is the stroller for you.
